Tourism Indochina: Medical travel: vital to maintaining demand

Tourism Indochina: Medical travel: vital to maintaining demand

(Tourism Indochina:Date : 2008-12-09):

Recent findings have suggested that the multi-billion dollar medical travel sector will be the next best thing to drive demand as mainstream sectors become increasingly threatened.

Focus On Medical Travel- fad or focus for hotel operators and investors?, conducted by Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels, found that hotel operators and investors are yet to tap into the medical travel sector’s full potential.

Currently, Asia drives the medical travel industry – in particular Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and India.

According to Mark Wynne Smith, CEO for Europe, Middle East & Africa at Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels, those countries have been developing first-class facilities with highly skilled medical specialists that have been trained abroad.

This results in the attraction of international tourists that want high-quality and relatively low-cost healthcare, said Smith.

Smith predicts that this market will expand increasingly in the future, with Eastern Europe, Turkey and Dubai already getting on the bandwagon.

Medical tourism will see travelers seeking for hotels and resort offering medical spas and rehabilitation at attractive destinations. There are already an estimated 120 spas, health clubs and clinics offering wellness treatments in Dubai alone.

“By 2015, the United Arab Emirates could be amongst the top spa destinations in the world with an estimated 200 hotels offering world-class facilities”

The research suggests that stakeholders ensure that the medical travel industry maintains accurate, high-quality and accessible information and care to garner a cemented reputation amongst travellers.

In turn, this will allow partnerships between hotel chains, property developers, airlines, insurance companies and financial institutions to tap the full potential of the medical travel sector.

“These partnerships are vital as medical travelers need the security and peace of mind provided by purchasing an all-inclusive package for their trip” concluded Smith.

Tourism Indochina: Using the community to conserve Cambodia's endangered marine life

Tourism Indochina: Using the community to conserve Cambodia's endangered marine life

(Tourism Indochina: Date : 2008-12-11):

The Kingdom's first marine conservation NGO plans to help local community members protect Cambodia's diverse ocean life against the threat of illegal fishing and new development

HAT was once a colourful sea floor teeming with ocean life had been completely wiped out. "There was nothing left - just bare sand," Paul Ferber, a co-founder of Marine Conservation Cambodia, said.

A fishing trawler had dragged a weighted net along the bottom of the sea floor, scraping the oceans bare and taking all the marine life with it. Bottom trawling - the marine equivalent to clear-cutting forests - catches everything in its path, rips out coral reefs and stirs up sediments that can suffocate life on the sea floor.

As much as 90 percent of what ends up in the net is by-catch, unwanted marine sea life that is useless to fishermen but integral to the ocean ecology, according to Greenpeace.

"It can take many years for an ecosystem to recover from something like that," Ferber said. Bart Kluskens, a researcher at Marine Conservation Cambodia, called weighted trawling "a waste of nature".

It was that dive nine months ago that inspired Ferber to increase his conservation efforts. Ferber, along with Bora Raan and Bart Kluskens, founded Marine Conservation Cambodia, the Kingdom's only NGO dedicated to conserving Cambodia's oceans.

Bottom trawling is not the only threat to Cambodia's sea life. Other types of illegal, damaging fishing techniques that involve cyanide or dynamite are common farther off the coast. Kluskens has come across a sunken boat with cyanide containers, and Ferber said he occasionally hears explosions underwater.

As the islands off of Sihanoukville become popular tourist destinations, a development boom promises to release sediment into the water, potentially smothering the coral reefs, Kluskens said.

Increased scuba diving also poses a danger. Currently, there are no mooring buoys at the most popular dive spots, meaning many boats accidentally drop their anchors on the reefs.

Abundant marine life

But despite the threats, Cambodia still has abundant marine life. Gianluca Lamberti, a trainer for Reefcheck, the largest coral reef monitoring program in the world, who is working with Marine Conservation Cambodia, said: "On any dive, you'll see 10 to 20 seahorses. This is incredible. There's not a place in the world where a person can see that".

Seahorses are an important indicator species, because they are particularly sensitive to pollution, Lamberti said. The government has recently classified seahorses as endangered, making them illegal to fish, according to Ferber, who has seahorse tattoo on his chest.

In order to combat the problems of illegal bottom trawling, Marine Conservation Cambodia has dropped concrete blocks around an area of diverse sea life with the help of the Fisheries Administration. If a trawler tries to drag a weighted net in the area, it will get caught in the blocks.

Marine conservation in Cambodia is still in its infancy; no one even knows what is in the oceans yet. No comprehensive survey of Cambodian sea life has been done, but Marine Conservation Cambodia and Reefcheck hope to change that.

With the help of the Koh Rong Samleom community, the organisation is constructing an island office, replete with bathroom, restaurant and bungalows, where it hopes to house scuba divers interested in learning ocean-conservation techniques. During the divers' conservation training, they will be monitoring the reefs by counting indicator species, Lamberti said.

Educating locals

The biggest focus of Marine Conservation Cambodia, however, is on land. The group has targeted people on Koh Rong Samleom, an island near ecologically diverse sea grass areas and coral reefs, to educate about marine conservation.

With the help of the Fisheries Administration, the Koh Rong Samleom community declared 8,000 hectares of water a community fishing area in September, meaning people outside of the community are not allowed to fish there without permission. Village members patrol the ocean and regularly expel illegal fishing boats.

Lay Thai, the chief of Koh Rong Samleom village, said, "When the community fishing area started, we were really happy. Before, we were not allowed to send boats away. With more fish, we'll have more happy tourists".

Starting next week, Marine Conservation Cambodia will train community members to scuba dive so they can see for themselves what they are trying to save.

"The best way to explain why marine conservation is important is to say, ‘Come down with us'. They can see things they had no idea was there," said Caroline St-Denis, who heads an education project at Marine Conservation Cambodia. "They will understand that learning to protect the coral will keep people coming."

Marine Conservation Cambodia sees children's education as key to their mission. "The children do most of the fishing. If we teach them now to fish [sustainably], they'll pass it on to the next generation," Ferber said.

"Even though our name is Marine Conservation Cambodia, it's about the village. If they're not struggling, they'll be able to help."

Through its involvement in the community, the group has helped build a path to the local school, taught classes and donated books.

To increase fish stocks, Marine Conservation Cambodia and the island community will also stick long bamboo poles with leaves coming out of them into the seafloor, effectively creating a fish farm that allows fish to lay their eggs and take refuge in the foliage.

"If we can make it work ... here, then we can take it to other places in Cambodia," Ferber said.

Tourism Indochina: Ecotourism project looks to lure visitors to isolated Mondulkiri

Tourism Indochina: Ecotourism project looks to lure visitors to isolated Mondulkiri

(Tourism Indochina:Date : 2008-12-12):

Local company plans to sink US$6 million into 100-hectare site around Bou Sra waterfall, but rights groups remain sceptical about its impact

A CAMBODIAN infrastructure group, Sar Lar Co, has plans to develop the area around Mondulkiri's Bou Sra waterfall in a bid to bring more tourists to the isolated province.

But while provincial officials are pleased with the influx of cash, others question whether local communities will benefit from the project.

"If the company has good policies to deal with the community, there will not be a problem; but if the company does not discuss the project with local people, they will not be happy," said Sam Sarun, deputy director of the provincial Department of Tourism, adding that whether local communities will gain from the development is the "big question" for them.

Sam Sarin, coordinator for Cambodian rights group Adhoc in Mondulkiri province, warned that residents there had been disappointed in the past when there were no employment opportunities for community members.

But company officials say the development will provide a huge boost for the area, tapping into the ecotourism potential of one of Cambodia's most wild areas.

"We will construct motels, restaurants, souvenir shops, cable cars, cottages," Ngin Sreoun, deputy director general of Sar Lar Co told the Post, adding that the company has received a 99-year lease from the government.

"We aren't cutting down forests for the development; we are preserving the area as an ecological and charming attraction," he said, adding that the project would create about 100 jobs for ethnic minorities in the province.

Sam Sarun welcomed the investment plan as a way to draw attention to the province.

"It will be a modern tourism facility. ... The project development is very big so I hope that it will attract a lot of local and foreign tourists," he said.

Construction began Monday and is expected take up to five years to complete, company officials said.

Tourism Indochina: The Australian Funds-in-Trust

Tourism Indochina: The Australian Funds-in-Trust

(Tourism Indochina:Date : 2008-12-15):

The Funds-in-Trust was created to support World Heritage-related activities in Asia and the Pacific region, with a particular priority to projects in the Pacific region, which is still one of the least represented regions on the World Heritage List.

The Australian Funds-in-Trust, established in August 2008 between the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the Australian Government, has been increased. A sum of $AUS830, 000 has been added to the Australian Government's first generous contribution of $AUS2.5 million. From the Funds-in-Trust, $AUS1.13 million will be used to support the development of a conservation and management plan for the World Heritage property of Angkor, Cambodia, through a project called Heritage Management Framework. The framework is designed to strengthen the technical expertise and governance of the Cambodian Government managing agency, APSARA, so that the benefits of tourism and development at Angkor can be shared fairly while ensuring environment protection.

The Funds-in-Trust will also support the organization of a workshop on the future direction of the World Heritage Convention to be held in February 2009. This workshop, requested by the World Heritage Committee, is meant to reflect on global strategic issues, key challenges, trends and opportunities facing the World Heritage Convention in view of its upcoming fortieth anniversary in 2012.

Tourism Indochina: CAMBODIA is hoping to lure more Chinese visitors

Tourism Indochina: CAMBODIA is hoping to lure more Chinese visitors

(Tourism Indochina:Date : 2008-12-16):

According to some Cambodian media resources, tourism authorities hope to double the number of Chinese visits within the next two year.

CAMBODIA is hoping to lure more Chinese visitors in the wake of crippling anti-government protests in Thailand and falling arrivals from Western countries hit by the global financial crisis, tourism officials told the Phnom Penh Post Monday.

Tourism Minister Dr. Thong Khon said that China is a growing tourism market and that officials plan to double the number of Chinese visitors by the end of 2009.

China is the fifth-largest market after Korea, Viet Nam, Japan and the United States, with 10,776 visiting Cambodia in the first 10 months of 2008, according to Tourism Ministry figures.

An April 2008 report by the Tourism Ministry said that 6.4 percent of the total number of tourists to Cambodia in the first four months of the year was Chinese.

In 2007, Cambodia received 94,374 Chinese tourists out of a total of 2,015,128 visitors, according to the Tourism Ministry.

"We plan to attract a large number of Chinese tourists to Cambodia in 2009, and step -by-step we will double the number to keep the tourism industry strong," Dr. Thong Khon said.

"We expect that a lot of Chinese tourists will visit Cambodia soon, if there are more flights than before ... and plan to advertise to attract Chinese tourists through CCTV1 television," he added. "Through this plan, we expect that big Chinese airline companies will increase their activity, too."

There are currently four air routes between Cambodia and China, namely from Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Guangzhou, Dr. Thong Khon said.

Ho Vandy, chairman of the Cambodian Association of Travel Agents (CATA), said the Tourism Ministry's plan might help attract more Chinese tourists.

He added however, that he does not expect the numbers to increase dramatically until 2010.

"I think the Tourism Ministry's plan to attract Chinese tourists to Cambodia is a golden opportunity, because China is warning their people not to visit Thailand, which is under turmoil," Ho Vandy said.

According to an evaluation by the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) up to 2020, China will get 100 million international visitors, while the country will also provide 100 million visitors to countries in the region.

Lao Heng, Chairman of VLK Tour Company, said that an increase in Chinese tourism would help offset declining visitors from the US and Europe.

"I think we should not depend on only European tourists," he told the phnom Penh Post.

"We had better look at regional tourists, because our people need food to eat."

Tourism Indochina:The Rating System Boost the Quality of Accommodation and Attract More Visitors

Tourism Indochina:The Rating System Boost the Quality of Accommodation and Attract More Visitors

(Tourism Indochina:Date : 2008-12-19):

THE government on Tuesday urged all of Cambodia's hotel owners to apply for a rating classification it says will improve the quality of services and attract more international travelers.

The rating system was first announced by a 2003 subdecree and awarded up to three stars based on the size and number of rooms, location, facilities, design, environmental impact, and food and service standards.

The system will now offer hotels the option of applying for up to five stars, based on the type of services they offer, Minister of Tourism Thong Khon told reporters Tuesday at a workshop on ecotourism.

"I believe that [hotel owners] will apply for classification because without it, they will lose customers." Only 10 hotels currently hold classification rankings, but the ministry has taken steps to make the registration process as simple as possible, Thong Khon said.

To receive a ranking, hotels will need to submit an application that includes a description of the services they offer and the number of stars they want, Thong Khon said.

An internationally trained three-member evaluation task force from the ministry's Hotel Classification Committee then reviews the applicant and gives an aggregate score, which determines the number of stars assigned, he said.

"If a hotel gets a score of 800, the rating will be five stars. A lower score will receive a lower rating," he said.

Rankings will be valid for only two years, after which hotels must reapply, he said, adding that application costs run between US$300 and $500, depending on the number of stars assigned.

Philip Set Kao, general manager of the Borei Angkor Resort and Spa, said hotel grading was not the only way to attract business. "I think the classification of hotels is the right thing to do to make them more competitive. But I believe that many hotels will not do it because they have done well without it," he said.

Tourism Indochina: Vietnam Tourism Remains Strong through Economic Crisis

Tourism Indochina: Vietnam Tourism Remains Strong through Economic Crisis

(Tourism Indochina:Date : 2008-12-25:)

There has been plenty of tourism news coming out of Vietnam recently, ranging from forum announcements to arrival figures, discounts and promotions to a new visa waiver, fuel surcharge cuts and a focus on Japanese arrivals.

ASEAN Tourism Forum

The 2009 ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF), considered the most important event in the ASEAN tourism co-operation framework, will be held in Ha Noi from January 5 to 12.

Around 1,500 delegates from around the world will participate in the eight-day forum, themed "Towards New Heights".

Ancient Hoi An Receives 450,000 Tourists

The ancient city of Hoi An received approximately 450,000 tourists, including 320,000 foreigners in 2008.

To attract tourists during the Christmas and New Year season, the Hoi An Culture, Sport and Tourism Centre is holding a number of traditional art performances, a street festival, an ethnic cultural fair and meetings with foreigners.

Visitors can enjoy a street festival on New Year’s Eve and a cultural fair showcasing each ethnic group.

Tour Operators Slash Prices as Economic Crisis Decreases Demand

Many Vietnamese tour companies are attempting to offset the damage of the global economic crisis by offering enticing discounts and other promotions.

Cholontourist Company said it has reduced the prices of some tours by US$50-60 and is considering further reducing profit margins in order to keep regular customers.

Vietnamese tour operators said the number of groups booking their services has dropped from an average of 25 a month to two or three.

Although December-February is usually the peak tourist season for the Asia-Pacific region, the outlook thus far is not looking good.

While Vietnam Airlines and Jetstar Pacific have been offering low-cost domestic fares in recent months, international tickets to Vietnam remain high.

Vietnam Waives Visas for Russians Tourists Next Month

Russian visitors with valid passports will no longer require visas to come to Vietnam as of January 1, 2009, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced.

Vietnam will be the third Southeast Asian country after Thailand and Laos to waive visas for Russian citizens visiting for tourism purposes.

For a visa waiver for stays of 15 days or less, Russian visitors must have a valid passport and a return or onward ticket.

Cathay Pacific Airways Cuts Fuel Surcharges for Long-Haul Services

Cathay Pacific Airways will significantly cut passenger fuel surcharges from US$25.1 to $13.8 for short-haul flights and from $106.7 to $64 for long-haul services in Northeast and Southeast Asia including those in Vietnam.

Viet Nam Remains Popular with Japanese tourists

Vietnam will be listed among the key destinations in Japan’s tourism promotion programme in the near future, according to the Japanese Association of Travel Agents.

Despite being in the throes of the global economic downturn, 400,000 Japanese have visited Vietnam YTD.

Vietnam Airlines said that the co-operation of Japanese travel agents and official agencies to hold cultural and tourism events will prove vital in attracting Japanese tourists to Vietnam.

Vietnam Airlines operates six direct flights from Ha Noi and HCM City to Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, and Fukuoka.

Tourism Indochina: Thailand plans $450 million to help tourist sector

Tourism Indochina: Thailand plans $450 million to help tourist sector

(Tourism Indochina:Date : 2008-12-26:)

($450 million) package for reviving its important tourist sector, badly hit by a crippling week-long airport blockade, the Tourism Minister said on Thursday.

"If businesses fail, it will cause damage to the country," Tourism and Sports Minister Chumpol Silpa-Archa told reporters after meeting with private tourism operators.

The 4-year rescue plan will help a tourist industry suffering from the effects of the closure of Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport closure during November as it was blockaded by anti-government protesters. The blockade paralysed the industry and stranded 300,000 travellers. The government fears the period may have tarnished its image as a tourist destination for years.

Tourism directly employs 1.8 million people in Thailand and brings in the equivalent of 6 percent of gross domestic product, making it a major economic driver.

"We have already lost 100 billion baht in revenues and more than 2 million tourists from the airport closure," he said of the blockade during the peak tourist season. He did not elaborate.

The $4-billion airport handles more than 100,000 passengers and outbound cargo worth around $85 million each day.

Apichart Sankary, president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents, said he expected the number of foreign tourists of 12-13 million next year, compared with 16 million projected by the Tourism Authority of Thailand before the airport siege.

"If the situation gets better, we may have more than 13 million tourists next year," he told the meeting, but gave no projection for this year.

Apichart said normally Thailand welcomed 8,000-12,000 foreign tourists a day during the peak season that started in November, but the number fell to 5,400 after the airport shut.

"Now we seem to have three low seasons in a row," he said.

Tourism Indochina: Thai Airway 2009 revenue targets will not be met

Tourism Indochina: Thai Airway 2009 revenue targets will not be met

(Tourism Indochina:Date : 2008-12-30:)

Thai Airways this week announced it will not be able to meet its previously set out revenue targets for 2009, with expectations that it will fall some 3-5% below its predictions.

2008 revenue will also drop, decreasing by 10% when compared to 2007, Thai Airways adds.

Load factors for the current year are also expected to fall below targets, set to sit at 70%, three per cent below previous forecasts, said the carrier in a press conference on Monday.

As such the carrier will look to making more network adjustments, with long-haul network changes on the top of the agenda, and South Africa and New Zealand the likely areas to be hit.

“The company has revised its business and marketing plan for next year due to the worldwide economic slowdown and the closure of two airports recently,” said Pandit Chanaphai, Thai Airways Executive Vice President Commercial.

“The target will have to be revised as we accept that global economic slowdown will certainly affect us.”

A decision won’t be finalized until after the next board meeting, but it is likely that the Bangkok–Johannesburg will be cut, while Bangkok– Auckland will be revised.

Thai Airways hopes that dropping capacity will see it make an average of 74% on its load factor average for 2009.

In 2008, Thai has already dropped its direct service to New York, while it now operates its Los Angeles services via Tokyo.

During the siege of protestors at Bangkok’s two main airports, Thai Airways had said that it expected to lose some THB500 million for each day of the disruptions during its peak travel period.

Tourism Indochina: Air travel, freight declines accelerated in November, IATA says

Tourism Indochina: Air travel, freight declines accelerated in November, IATA says

(Tourism Indochina:Date : 2008-12-31:)

Worldwide air travel fell for a third straight month in November, with cargo handling logging a “shocking” decline because of weakening global trade, the International Air Transport Association said.

Passenger traffic, or kilometers flown multiplied by the number of travelers, slumped 4.6 percent from a year earlier, IATA said today in a statement on its Web site. That compares with a 1.3 percent decline in October and a 2.9 percent drop in September. Freight traffic plunged almost 14 percent, the sixth straight monthly decrease.

The decline in air travel outstripped a 1 percent reduction in capacity and is likely to lead to airlines logging losses in the fourth quarter, according to Giovanni Bisignani, IATA’s chief executive officer. Japan’s sales abroad plunged the most on record in November, while Germany’s exports in October fell 0.5 percent and those of the U.S. fell 2.2 percent.

“The industry is now shrinking by all measures,” Bisignani said in the statement. The decline in freight transport “clearly shows the rapid fall in global trade and the broadening impact of the economic slowdown.”

Asia-Pacific freight traffic fell 17 percent, the largest decline of any region, the association said. China’s exports decreased for the first time in seven years in November while imports plunged, China’s customs bureau reported Dec. 10.

Geneva- and Montreal-based IATA estimates that more than one-third of the value of goods traded internationally is transported by air.

Tourism Indochina: Taiwan's TransAsia Airways to fly Taipei Siem Reap route

(Tourism Indochina:Date : 2008-12-31:)

Taiwan's TransAsia Airways is slated to launch its first direct charter flight Friday between Taipei and the Cambodian city of Siem Reap, the gateway to the world renowned temple complex of Angkor Wat.

Joe Chu, the airline's sales manager, said that the new service will fill a gap in market demand left by the previous airline that flew the route. It will also save travel time to the famous Cambodian tourist attraction, which is listed as a world heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Far Eastern Air Transport, which in cooperation with the Cambodia-based Angkor Airways used to provide regularly scheduled flights on the route, canceled the service in May due to financial difficulties.

Chu said that TransAsia Airways, which will be the only airline serving the route, will fly 15 charters a month, serving only tour groups and travelers that join foreign independent travel (FTI) packages offered by the travel agencies.

The initial response to the charter scheme, which will continue for at least for one year, has been good, with the first two scheduled charters already fully booked, he added

Tourism Indochina: Bangkok nightclub fire kills 54 injures 100

(Tourism Indochina: Date : 2009-01-02:)

Bangkok, Thailand – A fire swept through a high class nightclub jammed with hundreds of New Year's revelers in the Thai capital, killing at least 54 people and injuring about 100, officials said early Thursday. Victims died from burns, smoke inhalation and injuries during the stampede to escape from the club, which had only one door for entry and exit, police Maj. Gen. Chokchai Deeprasertwit said.

He said that the fire may have been caused by firecrackers brought into the Santika Club by guests or sparks flying from a New Year's countdown display on the nightclub stage.

Police said 53 people people were confirmed dead at the club and another person died at a hospital. Workers counting bodies told The Associated Press that about 100 others were injured when the blaze broke out in the building, which has two stories and a basement.

The rescue workers said most of the bodies were found in the basement of the club, which attracts a well-heeled crowd of Thais and foreigners. The corpses, placed in white body bags, were laid out in rows in the parking lot in front of the club.

A video provided to AP Television News by one of the rescue workers showed bloodied, bruised and burned victims being dragged out of the burning club or managing to run through the door or shattered windows. Flames were racing through the entire building during the rescue operation.

Witnesses said several hundred people were inside the club when the blaze erupted.

One local Web site about the entertainment scene in Bangkok described the club as attracting "an affluent Thai student crowd, with Euro models and Westerners also popping in" with a "whisky-sipping crowd all focused on a large stage."

Tourism Indochina: Singapore Air Cargo pilots offered unpaid leave on demand slump

Tourism Indochina: Singapore Air Cargo pilots offered unpaid leave on demand slump

(Tourism Indochina:Date : 2009-01-05:)

Singapore Airlines Ltd., the world’s biggest airline by market value, said its cargo unit is offering pilots as much as 30 months’ unpaid leave because of slumping air-freight demand.

The cargo unit is also planning to park some aircraft over the next few months, airline spokesman Stephen Forshaw said in an e-mail today. The airline’s passenger unit isn’t planning any similar steps at present, he added.

Singapore Airlines joins Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. in offering employees unpaid leave, as airlines battle to cut costs amid slowing demand. Global freight traffic fell 13.5 percent last month from a year earlier, the sixth straight decline, while passenger traffic dropped for the third month in a row, the International Air Transport Association said yesterday.

“SIA Cargo needs to do all it can to contain costs,” Forshaw said. The freight unit has about 300 pilots, while Singapore Airlines employs about 2,000 pilots, the Business Times said today, when reporting the plans.

The cargo unit posted an operating loss of S$76 million ($53 million) in the six months ended September, compared with a S$19 million profit a year earlier, the airline said in November.

Singapore Airlines started the cargo division in 1992. The unit operates 14 Boeing Co. 747-400F freighters as well as using capacity on Singapore Airlines’ passenger aircraft, according to the company’s Web Site.

Tourism Indochina: Growth in low cost carrier passenger traffic within Asia Pacific

Tourism Indochina: Growth in low cost carrier passenger traffic within Asia Pacific

(Tourism Indochina:Date : 2009-01-08:)

SINGAPORE - Airline companies have played an immense feat, juggling both the legacy and low-cost carrier segment with unwavering commitment in going through the test of times during the last seven years and especially through 2008. The year 2007 was a year of regaining profitability for the airline industry after the uphill struggle of cutting off redundant infrastructure and going through various mergers and acquisitions and recovering from the post 9/11 downturn in volume of passenger air traffic. The exponential surge in fuel price and present volatility in financial sectors have significantly affected the aerospace industry as a whole.

According to Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific Consultant of Aerospace & Defense Practice Amartya De, the year 2008 alone saw the International Air Transport Association (IATA) terminate 26 carriers and is keeping watch on 10 - 15 other carriers.

"This watch is not concentrated on any particular part of the world, but rather, in many different pockets. The load factor has remained more or less close to 75 percent since the last 7 years, and there is not much one can do above this unless the existing capacities are significantly cut down," he said.

He added that North America has been the largest loser in 2008 with Europe and Asia Pacific making meager profits of a few hundred million dollars and the Middle East retaining a little respectable share by the close of 2008.

"Airline companies will be able to rationalize and offer efficient services with gradual freedom to operate in open skies if governments look to deregulation as a way to promote the industry as a whole. The previous drop of 50 percent in airline share prices might just reach their initial levels, post all the merger and infrastructure cutbacks by early 2009," he continued.

In terms of industry, Frost & Sullivan estimates that the year 2009 will have its share of global losses owing to the liquidity crunch in the airline industry but most of it will be taken off by the US market. Emerging economies in Asia Pacific will still see an increase in passenger traffic of the order of 5 - 7 percent.

"The prices of air tickets globally will have come down to initial levels by end of 2008. On a positive note, the Asia Pacific players will not face any loss for 2009 and might even be left with few cents in the pocket. The market will still see reasonable growth in Low Cost Carrier (LCC) passenger traffic within Asia Pacific and even in the long haul segment," De said.

Frost & Sullivan also estimates that there will be stronger growth in the economy class travel rather than in the long-haul business class travel mainly for Asia and intra-Europe. "The three sectors - namely Europe-Middle East, Middle East-Asia, and Asia-Europe - will continue to grow at about 7 percent CAGR in 2009," De continued.

He also added that despite the financial slowdown, there will be continuing demand for new and fuel-efficient narrow body aircrafts with around 1,800 new fuel-efficient aircraft deliveries for 2009 equally shared by Boeing/McD-D and Airbus, while on the other hand, airlines will continue to deal with volatility in foreign currencies and hedging strategies.

"The financial torrent is affecting the aircraft leasing sector more than ever before and these times of change are definitely going to lay the new foundations of this industry. Increasing cost-cutting measures and resource sharing are forging together new business models in the airline industry," he said.

According to De, "The distinction between Legacy and LCC becomes thinner and thinner, and eventually we will see fewer carriers with better service and a reasonable ticket prices."

(Tourism Indochina:Date : 2009-01-09:)

The Strategic Planning Forum to be held by the Asia Pacific Spa Wellness Coalition in Bangkok is hoped, by both managers and executives, to assist the industry through difficult times.

The third annual event is to be held at the Four Seasons Hotel, on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st of February, 2009.

The events were previously held in Bali and Kuala Lumpur, and the Strategic Planning Forums were heralded as a success.

The 2009 event embraces the trend of looking forward, with the appropriate theme of themed ‘Re-align, Re-cap and Re-energise.’

The forum hopes to evaluate the accomplishments of 2008, as well as provide an opportunity to re-consider priorities in both the short and long term future.

The five task forces will review their own work for the year, whilst identifying the areas requiring further development and implementation methods.

Regional reports of the spa and wellness associations around the region will also be considered, for the benefit of future strategic planning.

Tourism Indochina: Mekong tourism officials outline future orientation

Tourism Indochina: Mekong tourism officials outline future orientation

(Tourism Indochina:Date : 2009-01-13:)

The 2 nd meeting of Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) tourism ministers on Jan. 9 passed a joint declaration concerning recent progress in cooperation between the region’s tourism authorities and orientation for future development.

The GMS tourism ministers’ meeting took place within the framework of the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) currently taking place in Hanoi.

GMS consists of Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

The joint declaration said that GMS’s tourism sector is continuing to grow and is standing firm against the fallout from the global financial crisis. Meanwhile, a new website for tourism promotion activities is to be launched soon, which will also act as a forum to effectively implement the Mekong tourism promotion strategy, which was adopted in 2005.

The Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office (MTCO) has successfully organised three recent seminars aimed at accelerating the implementation of preferential projects under the tourism development plan, and preparing in-depth proposals to present at the upcoming conference of development partners later this year.

GMS tourism ministers praised the MTCO Executive Director’s efforts to speed up the programme regarding tourism development and marketing and improve coordination in the implementation of the tourism strategy.

The ministers also made a special note of the assistance received from the French government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in enhancing the MTCO’s financial and technical capacities, and spoke highly of Thailand’s initiative in launching the Mekong Tourism Year 2009-2010.

Regarding their orientation for the future, the six GMS countries’ tourism ministers affirmed that they would make full use of the sub-region’s infrastructure and improve and expand their coordination to promote the development of sustainable tourism in a socially responsible manner. The six nations vowed to continue to pool their resources in order to establish GMS as a common destination in the context of the global economic recession.

The six ministers requested that the Tourism Working Group and MTCO exploit all available resources and hoped that the upcoming conference of development partners later this year would be successful in expanding their mutually-beneficial partnership.

MGS expects to welcome 53 million foreign visitors by 2015, generating new jobs for more than 4.2 million workers

Tourism Indochina: Travel magazine chooses top 10 budget destinations

Tourism Indochina: Travel magazine chooses top 10 budget destinations

(Tourism Indochina:Date : 2009-01-19):

Undiscovered places, important events and tumbling foreign currencies helped define Budget Travel Magazine's list of the top 10 budget destinations for 2009.

Austin, Texas, made the list as a venue for affordable and free cultural events like the annual South by Southwest festival. Washington was included because of the presidential inauguration, but also because so many of the museums and monuments are free to visit. The magazine also lauded Hawaii because a drop in visitors last year has led to discounts this year.

Abroad, Budget Travel recommends Mexico, Hungary and Iceland as places where the U.S. dollar goes farther than it used to.

Destinations getting ready for big events include Berlin, which marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall this year, and Vancouver, which will host the Winter Olympics in 2010.

Finally, the magazine's list includes Cambodia for its affordable guesthouses and must-see temples, and Panama, for its eco-tourism and wildlife.

Tourism Indochina: Aviation industry still committed to reaching emissions targets

Tourism Indochina: Aviation industry still committed to reaching emissions targets

(Tourism Indochina:Date : 2009-01-20):

The international aviation body has reiterated that it is still committed to cutting its carbon footprint despite a weakening global economic sentiment set to cut into their profit margins.

Using what it calls a “four pillar strategy”, which features investing in technology, flying planes more effectively, building efficient infrastructure and using positive economic measures, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) says the aviation industry is still eyeing a carbon-neutral future.

“Our commitment to environmental responsibility is firm and strong.” said Giovanni Bisignani, IATA Director General and CEO.

“Even as we face the worst revenue situation in 50 years - with US$2.5 billion in losses this year, following a US$5 billion loss in 2008 - we are determined to continue to deliver effective solutions that reduce aviation’s emissions.

“No other industry is as united in its approach. The IATA vision is to achieve carbon-neutral growth on the way to a carbon-free future.”

Using its four pillar strategy, IATA forecasts that the aviation industry will reduce its emission by 4.5% in 2009, and while it notes that 2.5% of this reduction will be due to a reduction in traffic, the rest will be achieved by efficiencies.

IATA points out that saving fuel-burn, which then leads to lower emissions is a good practice for the airlines as well, as they then save more on fuel efficiencies.

By 2020 IATA is targeting a 25% improvement in fuel efficiency when compared to 2005.

In 2008 alone airlines saved 15 million tonnes of CO2 with more streamlined procedures, which amounted to US$5 billion worth in savings

Tourism Indochina: European, US tourists may drop, but Asia looks upbeat

Tourism Indochina: European, US tourists may drop, but Asia looks upbeat

(Tourism Indochian:Date : 2009-01-21:)

While the number of tourists visiting Bali from Europe and the United States might drop, tourists from the Asia-Pacific countries will increase, a noted tourism association has predicted.

The Bali chapter of the Association of the Indonesian Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA) predicted that tourists from European countries and the US may drop by 40 percent this year compared to last year. "Tourists from Europe and the US will be those worse hit by the global financial crisis. Furthermore, the flights from Europe and the US (to Bali) are the most expensive," ASITA Bali chapter chairman Aloysius Purwa said in Denpasar on Saturday.

In 2008, the number of tourists from the United States reached an average of 5,000 per month, while tourists from European countries reached an average of 40,000.

However, he noted that the financial crisis could persuade tourists from the Asia-Pacific countries to change their holiday destinations from crisis-hit countries to Bali. He predicted a 10 percent increase in the number of tourists coming from countries such as Japan, Taiwan, China and Malaysia.

He said the upcoming 2009 election may bring more domestic tourists to Bali, citing a traditional upsurge in domestic travel during the campaign season.

"This is usually caused by parties campaigning around the country accompanied by their supporters," Purwa said.

course this could mean that they may travel to holiday spots during their stopovers. They are tourists too, in a sense."

According to data from the Bali Tourism Agency, the number of tourists coming to Bali reached 1.9 million last year. Japanese tourists remain in the top spot as the largest contributor to the island's tourism industry, with Australia coming in second and Taiwan third.

The tourism agency has cut its target of tourists from 2.1 million to 1.8 million this year, citing the financial crisis as its main reason.

"We have aimed for 2.1 million based on data from the past five years, but have decided to reduce that target to a more realistic 1.8 million due to the global financial crisis," Bali Tourism Agency Chief Gede Nurjaya said.

Meanwhile, Bali Tourism Board Chief Ida Bagus Ngurah Wijaya was optimistic that the predicted increase in the number of Asian tourists could help the island exceed its target of 1.8 million tourists this year.

"I am very optimistic that we can exceed the government's target, because aside from getting a lot of cancellations, we have also been getting a lot of reservations," he said.

Tourism Indochina: Asia Pacific travel sector will get worse before it gets better

Tourism Indochina: Asia Pacific travel sector will get worse before it gets better

(Tourism Indochian:Date : 2009-01-23):

Key Asian tourism destinations including Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong and India are bracing themselves for a weak 2009, as traveller numbers are expected to drop.

In a recent report from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the tourism body recognised that the tourism sector in the Asia Pacific bore much of the brunt in the last quarter of 2008.

“The slowdown was particularly strong since August following the spike in oil prices and the consequent cuts in airline capacity and increasing transport costs,” noted the UNWTO.

“In the shorter term, overall prospects – against continuing downward revisions in macro-economic expectations and primary generating markets in recession – look quite gloomy.”

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) too has noted that traffic in and out of the Asia Pacific has dropped more than any other region in recent months.

In comparison, North America traffic figures were doing relatively well due to having entered the downward trend much earlier than the Asia Pacific.

IATA notes that in 2009, “North America [aviation] will be the only region in the black,” whereas the Asia Pacific is expected to see losses more than double from the US$500 million in 2008 to US$1.1 billion.

For these destinations a drop in capacity from carrier will translate to weaker profits across the board, from hotels to attractions as well as restaurants and convention centers.

Tourism Indochina: Phnom Penh-Siem Reap Airline Traffic

Tourism Indochina: Phnom Penh-Siem Reap Traffic

(Tourism Indochina: Date : 2009-01-28):

Full year figures are in for Cambodia’s two airports and while the airport serving the capital Phnom Penh held its own, the more leisure hub of Siem Reap dipped slightly as leisure travelers opted to stay at home.

Following years of dramatic growth levels Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH) lifted by 5.6% to 1.69 million visitors from the 2007 level of 1.6 million passengers, holding steady amidst global uncertainties.

Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport (SEP), which services the world heritage site of Angkor Wat saw a marked downturn of leisure traffic, dropping 11.6% down to 1.53 million passengers for the full year from 1.73 million achieved in 2007.

Despite the fact the Phnom Penh serviced the capital city; traffic at the touristier SEP overtook PNH in 2006. This recent dip edges PNH back in front.

Forecasts for 2009 show that whilst the capital is expected to slightly grow its traffic numbers Siem Reap, on the other hand, is expected to continue its contraction.

Both PNH and SEP are managed by Cambodia Airports. The government run aviation body also runs Sihanoukville International Airport (KOS), the country’s third, and newest, international airport which does not yet offer scheduled services.

Tourism Indochina: Setting up new charter on combating pilot fatigue

(Tourism Indochina:Date : 2009-01-29):

Tourism Indochina: Setting up new charter on combating pilot fatigue

After several recent studies that many pilots are flying whilst fatigued, the United Nations’ aviation agency announced that it is working on a new charter to better combat pilot fatigue.

The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) will take steps to drop the existing standards to battle fatigue which only consider hours of flight time, for a new model which considers things like sleep cycles, quality of rest breaks, and even nutrition.

Using the relatively new concept of “fatigue risk management systems”, an ICAO spokesperson said the existing standards will be reviewed before June this year, and new best practices could be launched by year’s end.

Some sleep experts have placed being fatigued to being more detrimental to motor skills than being drunk.

Many pilots are concerned about current standards which only consider time up in the air, and not layover and transiting period. They have been seeking mandated rest periods to be determined by total time on duty instead.

In Europe a 47-page report released this month by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) raised serious concerns about the number of pilots who were potentially flying fatigued due to work conditions such as long hours, crossing time zones and having to work too often at night.

EASA’s report, which was written by ten experts across the EU, recommended including at least ten hours sleep for crew, meal breaks for 30 minutes ever six hours as well as a shorter 10 minute break every three hours.

In the US the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has this year introduced new rules for long-haul flights to ensure pilots receive quality rest breaks, which is already seen seven major airlines file an appeal to block the move saying it will incur “significant costs”

Tourism Indochina: Minority groups in Cambodia get spotlight

Tourism Indochina: Minority groups in Cambodia get spotlight

(Tourism Indochina: Date : 2009-01-30 ):

According to media sources in Phnom Penh, the Center for Advanced Study (CAS) has announced a release of the first book about the history of ethnic minority groups in Cambodia.

The 664-page book examines the lifestyles and cultures of Cambodian residents of Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai and Laotian descent, as well as members of Muslim and other minority communities, CAS director Hun Sokhom was quoted by the Phnom Penh Post as saying.

"We hope the book will help Khmer people better understand the traditions and cultures of each ethnic group," Hun Sokhun said, adding that he believed that widespread distribution of the book will reduce discrimination directed at minority groups.

The book is based on two separate studies carried out by Khmer and foreign experts - a three-month study by the United Nations in 1996, and a 12-month study in 2006, paid for by the Rockefeller Foundation, according to the newspaper.

Tourism Indochina: Will Thai Airways have the courage of Malaysia Airlines

(Tourism Indochina:Date : 2009-01-31):

Repeated rumors about Thai Airways International quasi-bankruptcy have surfaced in Thailand’s newspapers over the last ten days, forcing the country’s national carrier to issue a release to officially deny it. But, according to The Nation newspaper, Thai management last Thursday also had to reassure the airline’s employees assuring of “stable outlook’” and adding also that staff lay-offs would be the last option.

It is definitely true that the airline will not go bankrupt. Thailand’s government, which holds 51 percent of the airline through the Ministry of Finance, will not let it happen. Thai Airways might even get a financial injection due to a severe liquidity shortage. The airline needs some Baht 19 billion (US$ 540 million) to resolve its liquidity problems. It has earlier discussed an agreed with Airbus to postpone the first payment of six new Airbus A330-300 by three months. The six jets must be delivered over the year and replace aging aircraft such as Airbus A300 and Boeing 747-300.

Thai Airways lost already Baht 6.6 billion (US$ 188 million) during the first nine months of the year with experts estimating now that the airline could lose up to US$ 300 million. In an interview conducted in late December, Thai Airways executive vice president for commercial and marketing Pandit Chanapai estimated that the closure of both Bangkok airports between November and December had cost the airline some Baht 500 million per day.

However, Bangkok airports’ woes just accelerated a rapid downturn in the airline’s fortune. If Thai Airways wants to survive, it has to change its way to conduct business and get rid of political interference, nepotism and its culture of inefficiency. In the last decade, Thai Airways’ strategy has been constantly fluctuating due to regular changes in its board of directors. They are generally acknowledged as rather incompetent as most of them are political appointees.

Thai Airways currently has one of the oldest fleet of any large Southeast Asian carrier. On average, 11.6 years with over 20-years old aircraft such as Airbus A300 and Boeing 747-400.

Adding to the airline’s woes is its overstaffing problem. The airline currently has 27,000 employees, compared to 14,000 at Singapore Airlines or 19,000 at Malaysia Airlines.

The Thai flag carrier is also struggling to build an efficient air hub at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi. complete missed integration of low cost subsidiary Nok Air into Thai’s network strategy, the forced transfer of some domestic routes to Don Muang or Thai website’s failed revamp can be described at best as “misguided” strategic decisions from the board.

Transport Minister Sopon Sarum acknowledged himself recently the need to have a board of directors capable to deal with hard times. “The new board must consist of people who can devote themselves and their time to their work,” the minister explained.

Under close scrutiny are all perks and advantages provided to all employees and especially directors and board members. The Bangkok Post revealed that the minister would like to review various allowances for fuel expenses, entertainment and attending board of directors meeting. Each year, directors, their families and accompanying passengers are entitled to 15 free first-class tickets for domestic and international routes with previous directors and their families to pay only 25 per cent of normal fares for up to 12 international and six domestic trips per year. Staff can enjoy up to 90 percent discount on air tickets, according to The Bangkok Post.

Although Thai Airways can’t indulge itself such luxuries for its employees, it is unlikely that anything will happen. The Minister will definitely face resilience from Thai staff with a board of directors watering down any decision until another Minister of Transport takes over. It is also unlikely that Thai Airways will reduce its staff, many of them being there thanks to their connections. “Retrenching employees will be the last option,” reassures Chanapai.

Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij asked already Thai Airways management to present a restructuration plan that will lead to financial sustainability of the airline and have long-term effects. Only a credible plan would open up the doors to the Ministry’s generosity.

Some measures have already been taken but they are certainly insufficient. According to Chanapai, Thai has started restructuring its network. Non-stop very long haul routes from Bangkok to Los Angeles and New York are already gone, Johannesburg was close on January 16 and Auckland is now under review.

“With the sharp decline in markets such as Korea and Japan, we think to provide more intra-orient flights,” added Chanapai.

Under consideration are frequencies such as Bangkok-Manila or Taiwan-Japan or Bangkok-Manila-Korea. Chanapai would also like to fly to the USA via Mainland China. Capacities will now be adjusted strictly to demand and not anticipated with a close eye on yields. But rather to close routes, Chanapai is keener to play on frequencies.

The airline wants also to renegotiate fees with its GDS. “It still costs us US$3 per transaction,” stresses the executive vice president. Other decisions include the reshaping of Thai website. “Only 3 percent of our sales are on the web as we would like to reach at least 12 percent”.

And by next March, Thai will finally retransfer all its domestic operations from Don Muang to Suvarnabhumi.

Financial relief will also come from the end of a costly fuel hedging operation in March and an anticipated travelers’ come-back in the second half of the year. Despite controversies about the delivery of new Airbus A330, the brand new aircraft will help Thai airways to cut its fuel and maintenance costs substantially. But Thai Airways must further act and is due to present more measures in February. And they should be painful, if politics allow it.

The airline could take its inspiration from its Malaysian neighbor. Managed in a similar way to Thai Airways today, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) was on the verge of bankruptcy in 2006. It went then through a painful but successful restructuring process. With new cash injected into the airline, Malaysia’s government also told the management that it would be the last time they would bail out the national carrier. But they also promise not to interfere into MAS management and commercial decisions. Today, Malaysia Airlines is again profitable. A lesson to be meditated by Thai authorities and Thai Airways board of directors.

Tourism Indochina: Tini Tinou Cambodia circus extravaganza

(Tourism Indochina:Date : 2009-02-03):

Tini Tinou 2009, Cambodia’s circus extravaganza now in its sixth year and bigger than ever, which attracts artists from around the world, will take place in both Phnom Penh (the country’s capital) and Battambang this coming March & April.

The spectacle is arranged and hosted by Phare Ponleu Selpak, whose roots are in the 1980s Thai refugee camps, caused by helpless people fleeing Cambodia as a result of the brutal Khmer Rouge regime in the late 1970s. Phare’s initial aim was to utilise visual arts to help children and young people overcome the Regime’s and subsequent 20 years of civil war’s torments. Today Phare Ponleu Selpak (meaning Light from Arts) is based in Battambang and goes from strength to strength, now providing fresh beginnings for disenfranchised and disaffected youth.

From March 10 to 26, prior to the festival officially commencing, their will be two weeks of workshops held by professionals and senior artists from around the world, such as France, Canada, Romania and Japan, to train the younger Cambodian artists.

The festival will officially open in Phnom Penh on March 28 with a colourful and exciting parade through the streets of the city, featuring all the invited artists, over 120 from 10 countries. Later that evening in the capital’s Olympic Stadium there will be a stage show, continued the following morning, with a cabaret afternoon; rich moments, unique & unmissable!

The international troupe then moves on to Battambang, where from 2 to 5 April the 12 companies from Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Japan, Romania, Germany, France, Belgium, Canada and Australia, will entertain the public with feats of acrobatics, juggling, trapeze flying, tightrope displays, contortionists, tumbling, and of course everyone’s favourite the antics of the clowns…

For people wishing to visit Cambodia during this time and experience the lively atmosphere, Asia Adventures Co. Ltd. - a Cambodia tour operator, is putting together a number of itineraries that will allow people to experience the event from start to finish, or just parts of it whilst visiting other destinations in the country such as the magnificent ancient temples of Angkor Wat. ‘This is truly a unique event in South East Asia, and it is a great time to visit Cambodia where not only can you experience the ancient cultural heritage of the country, but also witness the vibrancy of contemporary Cambodia’, explained Mark Ellison, Asia Adventures Managing Director. ‘The work Phare is doing with these youngsters, lifting them off the streets and filling them with hope, seeing how much they enjoy performing, shouldn’t be missed by anyone who is in the c! ountry during this time,’ he added.

Tourism Indochina: US Airways Ranked Number One On Time Airline for 2008

(Tourism Indochina:Date : 2009-02-12):

US Airways officially became the nation’s number one on-time airline among the “Big Six” hub-and-spoke airlines for 2008 according to results released by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) monthly Air Travel Consumer Report. For the year, 80.1 percent of US Airways’ flights arrived within 15 minutes of their published arrival time—the metric by which airlines’ on-time performance is measured by the DOT.

“The first place ranking amongst the Big Six for the year is a direct reflection of the hard work and determination of our 34,000 employees,” said US Airways Chairman and CEO, Doug Parker. “While 2008 was a very challenging year for the airline industry, our employees pulled together to deliver an amazing operational turnaround.”

Year over year, US Airways jumped from sixth to first in on-time performance among the six largest hub-and-spoke carriers (American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Northwest Airlines and United Air Lines), achieving a 16.5 percent improvement over 2007.

“We know that time is very important to our customers and today’s report validates the importance we place on running a reliable airline. Our customers can count on us to get them where they want to go on-time,” Parker said.

And for the month of December, despite severe winter storm conditions, US Airways ranked first in on-time performance among the ten largest carriers. In 2008, the airline ranked among the top three in on-time performance nine times and finished among the top three in bag handling once, resulting in $500 in bonuses for every employee for 2008’s performance.

International travel hits new records: UNWTO

Financial woos have not slowed the international traveller as worldwide travel reached a new record with up to 440 million arrivals for the first half of 2011.

According to World Travel Organisation (UNWTO) statistics, the 4.5 percent rise on international tourism was lead by the 4.8 percent growth in emerging economies and saw 19 million more passengers take-off this year. .

Despite tough economic situations, Europe and the Sub-Saharan Africa saw a six and nine percent rise, while the Middle East and North Africa saw travel drop by 13 and 11 percent. .

The Americas also welcomed a six percent increase, while South America shot up by 15 percent for the period compared the first six months last year. .

“The sustained growth registered in tourism demand in such challenging times clearly makes the case for the sector and reinforces our call to consider tourism as a priority in national policies,” UNWTO secretary-general Taleb Rifai said. .

“Tourism can play a key role in terms of economic growth and development, particularly at a moment when many economies, for the most part in Europe and North America, struggle for recovery and job creation. .

“We are very encouraged to see demand picking up in such important tourism destinations and call for continued support to these countries which are today fully ready to receive travellers from all over the world.” .

Mr Rifai concluded that despite the record breaking growth, tourism needs to “remain cautious”, particularly as “many advanced economies” face slow growth and high unemployment. Source ETB

First Boeing 747:8 resplendent in Lufthansa livery

The first Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental emerged from the paint hangar at Boeing’s Everett factory near Seattle on Sunday resplendent in the Lufthansa livery. The fuselage is painted in the classic Lufthansa White, while the tailfin and the Lufthansa logo on the fuselage are painted in Night Blue. The Lufthansa emblem on the tailfin – an encircled crane in flight – is offset in Night Blue against a Melon Yellow background.

After completing extensive ground tests, the aircraft will undergo initial test flights in November, and is scheduled to go into service next spring with the registration D-ABYA. Lufthansa is the launch customer for the passenger version of the Boeing 747-8 and has therefore been involved from the outset in the design of the aircraft. The Boeing 747-8 has been stretched by six metres compared with the Boeing 747-400. The new Jumbo measures 76.3 metres in length, making it the world’s longest passenger airliner.

The Boeing 747-8 is also setting new standards in terms of sustainability. For example, the redesigned wings with their state-of-the-art profile and ranked wingtips give the aircraft an aerodynamic advantage. In addition, the newly developed GEnx-2B67 engines offer greater fuel efficiency as well as reduced emissions and noise levels. The Boeing 747-8 consumes 13 per cent less fuel than the Boeing 747-400.

Lufthansa has ordered 20 Boeing 747-8s, which are due for delivery from the beginning of 2012 through to mid-2015, and also has options on a further 20 aircraft. Source ETB

Cambodia Has Approved a US$516.7 Million for Horse-racing and Entertainment Centre Project

(Tourism Indochina: Date : 2009-02-14):

The Council for Development of Cambodia has approved a US$516.7 million horse-racing and entertainment centre project by Heng Development and Horse Racing Co and two undisclosed foreign companies from France and Malaysia, Heng Development said Wednesday.

The complex, an international entertainment centre over 200 hectares, will be the first of its kind in the Kingdom.A manager at the company who requested anonymity told the Post that the project - to be built 25 kilometres south of Phnom Penh in Ang Snuol district, Kandal province - would aim to attract wealthy domestic and foreign tourists.

"Our plan is to start the investment project in 2009, but with the financial crisis ... we are just at the stage of clearing space and building infrastructure," the manager said, adding that roads, water systems, electricity and drainage all had to be added to the Greenfield site.

Heng Development said the names of the two foreign companies involved would be unveiled at a later date. The project, which has been in the works since 1995, said the manager, will also feature a hotel, guesthouse, golf course and a lake.

Minister of Tourism Thong Khon welcomed the project this week, saying that a boost to tourism would be good for the industry, but noted that a gambling complex would require authorization from the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

Such a complex would likely help attract wealthy tourists from Asia - China, Japan and South Korea, in particular - and add to the Kingdom's high-end tourist attractions following the recent development and promotion of the King's Golf Course project.

Tourism Indochina: Visa and PATA Survey Boosts Morale of Asia Pacific Tourism Industry

Tourism Indochina: Visa and PATA Survey Boosts Morale of Asia Pacific Tourism Industry

(Tourism Indochina:Date : 2009-02-15):

The positive results of the Visa and PATA Asia Pacific Travel Intentions Survey has boosted the overall morale of the Asia Pacific tourism industry.

The survey, entitled, ‘Determining Travel Preferences in 2009 and Beyond’ found that of the 5,554 people surveyed, 36 percent said they did not expect to make any changes to their travel plans in the near future.

Australians, British, Singaporeans, Indians, French and Americans considered their holidays to be a right not a privilege and were less likely than the average respondent to let the economic crisis get in the way of their travel plans.

64 percent of respondents said that in light of the economic uncertainty they would review their travel plans.

Among those respondents reviewing their plans, 57 percent (mainly from Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Chinese Taipei and China) said they would search for less expensive destinations or itineraries.

Domestic travel was an option being considered by 38 percent of respondents, with more travellers from Japan, India, Chinese Taipei, the United States and China opting to holiday ‘in their own backyards’.

While just 36 percent of travellers surveyed said they were planning to postpone travel in the near future.

Meranda Chan, Visa Country Manager for Singapore and Brunei, and PATA Board Director, said: “While the global economic situation will impact tourism, it is unlikely to bring travel to a standstill. What our survey has shown is that travelers will be more creative in their selection of destinations.”

Greg Duffell, President and CEO - PATA said: “The travel and tourism industry is a major employer in nearly every destination in Asia Pacific. Indeed, the top two global markets for travel and tourism employment are China (74.5 million jobs) and India (30.5 million jobs) with Japan, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand also in the top 10.

“We must never understate the importance of working with the travel industry to shape promotions and offerings that suit travellers’ desires for new and economically sensitive travel options – and it’s vitally important that the industry delivers innovative and creative solutions to keep these people travelling.” The Visa and PATA survey has named Asia Pacific as the number one region for those intending to travel overseas from now until 2010.

60 percent of respondents said they would travel to Asia Pacific while North America and Western Europe ranked second and third with 35 percent of the votes each.

The top three Asia Pacific destinations that respondents were considering between now and next year were Australia (43 percent), Japan (37 percent) and Hong Kong (35 percent).

Meranda Chan, Visa Country Manager for Singapore and Brunei, and PATA Board Director, said: “That Asia Pacific was named the leading global leisure travel region by respondents in Visa and PATA’s latest travel survey reinforces the vital role this industry fills in the regional economy.

“ PATA figures show that international arrivals to Asia Pacific destinations grew year on year by some 2.6 percent in 2008 - despite the economic slowdown which created a serious impact on inbound traffic in the second half of the year. The industry accounts for more than 5.5 percent of the total gross domestic product in the region, underscoring the importance of travel and tourism to the vibrant economies of Asia Pacific.”

Tourism Indochina: Vietnam Airlines to open direct flight to the US

Tourism Indochina: Vietnam Airlines to open direct flight to the US

(Tourism Indochina:Date : 2009-02-18):

The national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines has announced a new plan to open direct flights to the U.S in 2010 if conditions are right, three years later than its earlier plan which was delayed for three years.

Vietnam Airlines confirmed that it would open direct flights to the U.S once the carrier is again economical strong enough.

At the moment, the airlines is preparing the market and planes to reach the goal of direct flights to the US by 2010.

According to the Vietnam Aviation Department, the US is a difficult market, and that aviation authorities in the country impose many conditions on airlines wanting to open direct flights to the country.

Besides making the airlines follow the US’ tight security and safety regulations, US aviation authorities also require airlines to supply a passenger list with personal information on all passengers on-board the planes four hours before take-off. This is an unprecedented condition, not require by most other countries. However, the US remains the number one aviation market, so most airlines in the world want enter it. That is why Vietnam Airlines is trying to open direct flights to the country, even in this time of worldwide economic crisis.

Like other airlines around the world, Vietnam Airlines’ number of passengers and cargo flights are decreasing.

In the first quarter of 2009, the number of international passengers traveling with the airline fell 5%, and the airline has set a target to carry only around 9.4 million passengers in this challenging year of 2009.

Last year, Vietnam Airlines carried nine million passengers.
