U.S. Teens Share Education With Kids in Cambodia

U.S. Teens Share Education With Kids in Cambodia

Cambodia's Overlake School is named after a school bearing that same name in Washington state, where students worked to fund their counterpart in Cambodia.

When the American students learned schools were badly needed in the Cambodian countryside, they began to work with the group American Assistance for Cambodia to build a school.

"Words can't express how proud I am of what we've accomplished," said 12th grader Kelsey Schmidt.

The students raised $15,000 through bake sales, talent shows and raffles to build the Cambodian school. Once the school was built, they kept raising funds for teachers, books and the computers.

New E-Mail Buddies

Some of the students had the opportunity to travel to Cambodia to receive a hero's welcome from hundreds of children at the school.

Kun Sokkea, 13, said she's in school for the first time and can finally dream of a better future.

She lives in a one-room shack and her mother is dying of AIDS, but she is now e-mailing her American friends to update them on her studies and progress as she learns English.

"What I want to take away is the knowledge that one person, a high school student, can make this huge difference in someone's life," said 11th grader Nathan Cocanour.

And in a remote corner of Cambodia, the students of the Overlake School have certainly done just that.

Cambodia ranks as Romantic Destination for the year 2007

If you are planning a romantic getaway to celebrate your new marriage, we want you to know you have got the Babylonians to thank for making honeymoons part of our wedding vocabulary. According to lore, it was a tradition for newlyweds to go into hiding for a full lunar cycle and drink nothing but mead.

Part of this custom, as we understand it, was to make the bride's family forget about her existence so that she couldn't just wander back home and continue living with them. Given the alcoholic content of this honey-based libation, it can probably also be assumed neither of them even remembered her address after a month of drinking, much less their own names.

Through the subsequent centuries, it's the time for couples came to symbolize an opportunity for them to escape their workaday worries and focus on getting acquainted. During the Victorian and Edwardian eras, this translated to anywhere from three months to a year and a half and involved plentiful hat boxes, steamer trunks and grand tours to exotic vistas where total strangers could toast their happiness.

Though few but the very rich these days can afford to disappear off the planet for long stretches, the speed of transportation and the global microscope created by the Internet has allowed couples to not only lock down a host of exciting venues in which to exchange their wedding vows but also book exotic retreats that bear absolutely no resemblance to the cities and suburbs to which they will return and settle into domestic bliss.

Among the hottest wedding venues for 2007 are vintage theaters, beaches, rustic barns, hotel ballrooms, botanical gardens, toney estates and plantations (especially in the South), bed and breakfast inns, and Medieval castles. The good news? Your guests will be nothing less than awestruck. The bad news? The more people who have already discovered your dream site, the farther in advance you?ll need to lock down a reservation. If the site is somewhat inaccessible (i.e., the middle of the Mojave), you'll also need to take into thoughtful consideration how, exactly, your elderly Aunt Liz is supposed to get there.

Honeymoon havens have likewise moved beyond an earlier generation?s satisfaction with Niagara Falls, Waikiki and Tijuana. For the adventurous, such ports of call as Belize, Brazil, the Galapagos Islands, Cambodia, Costa Rica and the Seychelles are on brides and grooms? 2007 wish list. Want to emulate the magic of the early 20th century? Cruise ships across the Mediterranean and land excursions that explore Borneo, Sri Lanka, Cape Town and India are reported to be in vogue by today's travel agents.

On the other hand, maybe you lovebirds just want some R&R and lots of pampering. Hot ticket spots this year include Costa de la Luz in Spain, farm-stays in Central Italy, secluded pueblos in Andalusia and an ecolodge in the Yucatan.

Not a morning person? The Transylvanian lodges at the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains are a popular attraction we're told you can really sink your teeth into.

Clinton surprises tourists at Cambodian temples

SIEM REAP, Cambodia (AFP) - Former US president Bill Clinton made a surprise visit to Cambodias famed Angkor Wat temples, where he impressed tourists by scaling the highest temple in the complex. Clinton, in Cambodia to tour AIDS-related projects and local organizations supported by his foundation, did not speak to reporters but shook hands with tourists. "I am so glad that the former US president came to visit the temples," said Cambodian visitor Pol Khim Pisith, who briefly saw Clinton before security officials pushed him away. "Bill Clintons visit will make our Angkor Wat more and more famous and attract more tourists," he said. Dressed in khaki trousers and a gray shirt, Clinton -- who is 60 and underwent quadruple bypass surgery in 2004 -- climbed on the highest temple, surprising tourists who helped him up. "Clinton visiting the temples is a good surprise," Belgian tourist Andre Deceuninck told AFP as he tried to take a picture of the 42nd US president. "I didnt know he was coming to see the temples. I thought it was a joke."

But the heavy security -- from both US Secret Service and Cambodian officials -- frustrated many visitors. "I really wanted to see him but security officials did not allow me to go closer to him," said 78-year-old Buddhist monk Sim Son. The popular former president has already visited India, Thailand, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea as part of his Asian tour as special UN envoy for tsunami recovery and as head of his own Clinton Foundation. Clinton was scheduled to visit a hospital for children in Siem Reap later in the day before travelling to Vietnam.
